I am committed to making Sydney the best place to live.
Since being first elected in 1988 as Member for Bligh, and from 2007 as Member for Sydney, I have worked to represent constituents directly. I provide an independent alternative to party politicians, and am a strong voice in Parliament.
I work for a sustainable environment and living amenity, and to defend our parks and foreshores. I promote progressive solutions to city problems and strongly support social justice measures such as public housing, and improved mental health and alcohol/drug support. As a former teacher, I’m a strong supporter of public education and adult learning.
Public disclosure of major government contracts, homosexual vilification protection, small bars, strata reform, same sex adoption, south east forest protection, land tax exemptions for low-cost housing and strong pet shop regulations are amongst significant legislation I’ve initiated and championed.
With fellow Independents John Hatton and Peter Macdonald, I forced political reform through the Charter of Reform to give the community greater scrutiny and oversight of bureaucracies and governments.
I offer honesty, openness and integrity, hard work and active representation to address the problems of Sydney as well as an ongoing commitment to raise standards in government and politics.
As an Independent, I answer to constituents, not faceless faction leaders in back rooms. I rely on community members to understand local issues and get action. Click here to get involved.
I’m passionate about making our city and world a better place for the future, which means we must tackle the global issues like climate change, inequality and poverty.
